Forest management shall be contucted sustainably in order to provide benefits to mankind, both for the today and future generations. Thus, the forest as a natural resource shall be able to provide ecological, economic and social cultural benefits in sustainable, optimal, and balance manners. The sustainable forest management is also a mandate of the Act of the Republic of Indonesia Number 41 of 1999 on Forestry.
To encourage sustainable forest management, it is necessary to build a certification system which allows stakeholders to assess the progress in achieving sustainable forest management. This system needs to be established with an objective benchmark according to the local, national and global conditions and requirements. Further, the system needs to be developed in a spirit of cooperation, togetherness without involving a negative campaign and various other forms of coercion and unfair pressure from one party to the another party. Those things have motivated the parties to establish a Forestry Certification Cooperation namely the Indonesian Forestry Certification Cooperation (IFCC).
